About YIH
Originally built in 1977, YIH served for decades as a vibrant centre for student activity, expression, and engagement. In 2022, the building underwent a major redesign to meet the evolving needs of the NUS community — with a strong emphasis on sustainability, inclusivity, and flexibility. YIH received the Holcim Foundation Design Award for Sustainable Construction (Bronze) in 2023 (NUS Yusof Ishak House | Holcim Awards).
The Net-Zero Goal
Sustainability at the Heart of Student Life
As an adaptive reuse of a beloved icon from the original 1970s campus masterplan, most of the original structure was retained to reduce embodied carbon, while preserving heritage and identity as a dynamic hub for student-life, and striving for net-zero energy in operations.
