Showing gratitude on NUS Wellbeing Day

On NUS Wellbeing Day (21 October), Students from the College of Alice and Peter Tan (CAPT)Active Community Engagement Wing (ACE) Elderly collaborated with the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) to organise a “Makan With Seniors” event with the senior staff of U-Town residential colleges.

First introduced in 2021, NUS Wellbeing Day promotes mental and emotional well-being by giving students and staff a day off to recharge and enjoy time away from school and work.

This was an appreciation event to express the students’ gratitude towards the senior staff over a buffet meal. A total of 70 staff and 35 students from the various residential colleges took part in this event. The “Makan With Seniors” event is part of the NUS International Seniors’ Month held in October, an extension of International Day for Older Persons on 1 October.

Michelle Chung, a Year 2 student from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and CAPT student lead said,

“It was so unusual to see all the familiar faces of the aunties and uncles in college sitting among us — conversing, laughing. Seniors and students alike had such a great time that it was really so heartwarming. Their joy was what made all the planning worthwhile!”

International Seniors’ Month aims to raise awareness of seniors in our daily lives and for us to show our appreciation towards them. CAPT ACE Elderly plans to host this meal with the senior staffs on a yearly basis to carry on the tradition of appreciating and giving.

“It is wonderful to see CAPT student leaders from the Active Community Engagement Wing (ACE Wing) collaborating with Office of Student Affairs (OSA) to host a simple lunch for our residential college dining hall staff, cleaners, and gardeners on NUS Well Being day.” added Ms Sue Chang-Koh, Director of Community Engagement, CAPT.
