NUS Electronic Music Lab (EML) had the honour of performing at the Singapore Art Week on 27 January 2024. Held annually, the Singapore Art Week is the biggest celebration of visual arts in Singapore, totaling over 150 events put up by artists from around the world.
EML performed as part of Sonic Sessions at Tanjong Pagar Distripark, a showcase of music performances, in collaboration with the Singapore Art Museum. Other notable artists in the lineup included George Chua, Intriguant, bani haykal and Mervin Wong.
For the performance, the club prepared a 45-minute set of original music, of which four tracks were composed and produced specially for Sonic Sessions.  These tracks spanned a diverse array of musical genres including hip-hop, electronic pop, lo-fi, 80’s retrowave, progressive house, darksynth metal and industrial noise music. The set deployed an eclectic mix of instruments, from synthesisers and drum machines to electric guitars.
EML broke new creative boundaries by working with live collaborative performance elements. These included having to seamlessly integrate guitars sounds and vocals, and even ending with a fully improvised noise metal track consisting of a heavily-processed electric guitar and electronic synth machines.
The eight EML performers that rose to the occasion and challenges are:
- Violet Yang, President of NUS EML, Year 2, Psychology
- Aditya Joshi, Year 1, Computer Science
- Brian Ko, Year 2, Theatre Studies and Art History
- Le Tu Quoc Dat, Year 1, Computer Science
- Max Chen, Year 2, Data Science & Economics
- Sidharth Premnath,Year 4, Electrical Engineering.
- Tan Jun Lin, Year 4, Business Administration
- Tan E-Reng, Assistant Tutor of NUS EML and NUS alumni (English Literature, Class of 2023)
The EML members were grateful for the exposure and experience.
“We are so honoured to have been invited to be a part of Singapore Art Week. Being able to provide a platform for young local artists to shine means so much to us as a club focused on original music, and this event has really allowed me to watch my fellow student musicians absolutely bedazzle. Some of our performers had never even performed live to a crowd before, and they still totally rocked the stage! This has been an experience we will never forget!” said Violet Yang, President of NUS EML.
