Insights: Factors that influence students’ university experience and wellbeing

Recognising the importance of student well-being, the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) has launched the “NUS Student Life & Wellness Survey” on 21 Mar 2024. This annual survey aims to delve into the various facets of student life, mental health, and well-being. Through a combination of quantitative data analysis and qualitative insights, the survey deep dives into the lived experiences of NUS students, uncovering both the triumphs and tribulations that shape their academic journey. The survey responses  provide invaluable insights into the challenges faced by students and areas where support and intervention are most needed.

Mr. Adrian Wan, Student Wellness Manager and Team Lead of the NUS Student Life & Wellness Survey explains: “This Survey is one of the most extensive in NUS that looks into the well-being of students. It provides us with a good understanding about our students' experiences in Student Life, and this enables us to seek ways to enrich their University experience.”

He adds: “We’re interested to pursue student-centred support and intervention strategies. [This] survey catalyses meaningful dialogues and actions aimed at fostering a more supportive and inclusive campus environment.”

What does the 2023 Survey results tell us?

The 2023 edition was conducted between 17 March and 13 April and received more than 8,300 responses, the highest number of responses in the past five years, and an increase of 54%  response rate compared to the previous year.

Key Finding 1: 3 in 5 students participate in Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) regularly

A sense of belonging is crucial for students as it contributes to their overall satisfaction and connection to the university community. It implies that participating in CCAs not only offers students opportunities for skill development and personal growth but also fosters a supportive social environment. This finding underscores the positive impact of extracurricular involvement on mental and emotional health.

OSA encourage students to join an interest group or try a new activity of interest to forge meaningful connections.

Key Findings 2: 7 in 10 students use healthy coping strategies when faced with stress

By actively engaging in activities such as exercise, mindfulness practices, socialising with friends, pursuing hobbies, or seeking support from trusted individuals, students enhance their emotional and mental well-being. Fostering a culture of self-care and promoting healthy coping mechanisms within NUS is paramount for the holistic development and well-being of students.

OSA recommend students to learn more about the 7 PitStop Principles to aid in stress management and self-care.

Key Findings 3: 3 in 5 students take the recommended course load

Students who follow the prescribed curriculum load tend to face fewer stressors related to overwhelming coursework. The survey sheds light on the importance of informed decision-making regarding course load selection. While the temptation to overload courses may stem from a desire to expedite academic progress or pursue additional interests, the potential repercussions on mental health and well-being cannot be overlooked.

OSA encourage students to discuss and seek advice from their respective academic advisors if they have an intention to overload in the following semesters.

By addressing these key findings through engaging and informative campaigns, OSA demonstrates its commitment to supporting student well-being and creating a campus culture that prioritises self-care and resilience.

Furthermore, OSA seeks to enhance credibility by providing greater transparency to students regarding the survey process. This transparency validates the robustness of the survey, reinforcing its importance in shaping policies and initiatives.

Moving forward with Survey 2024

Student participation is vital as it provides valuable insights that help NUS enhance student services and improve the overall student life experience. Student's voice matters, and their input contributes to shaping the university's policies and programs, ensuring they reflect the needs and concerns of the student body.
