About YIH

Originally built in 1977, YIH served for decades as a vibrant centre for student activity, expression, and engagement. In 2022, the building underwent a major redesign to meet the evolving needs of the NUS community — with a strong emphasis on sustainability, inclusivity, and flexibility. YIH received the Holcim Foundation Design Award for Sustainable Construction (Bronze) in 2023 (NUS Yusof Ishak House | Holcim Awards).

YIH Reimagined

What does YIH mean to today’s NUS students? How might they envision their future, shape the spaces, and call YIH their own? Student illustrator Owen Chau (Y3, Medicine) captures this spirit in this artistic expression of the event highlights at the YIH Reopening on 15 Oct 2025.

The Net-Zero Goal

Sustainability at the Heart of Student Life

As an adaptive reuse of a beloved icon from the original 1970s campus masterplan, most of the original structure was retained to reduce embodied carbon, while preserving heritage and identity as a dynamic hub for student-life, and striving for net-zero energy in operations.
