NUS Electronic Music Lab makes waves through music experimentation

The past ExxonMobil Campus Concerts (EMCC) season themed Intrigue & Intricacies saw many fresh and exciting collaborations between NUS students and Singaporean artists.

Of these was the pilot edition of Four Blank Walls: Experiments in Sound, an experimental electronic music showcase presented by Centre for the Arts that invited four talented NUS Electronic Music Lab students and Singaporean electronic sound artist and sound designer, Syafiq Halid. Together, they collaborated on an eight-week workshopping process that culminated in a public showcase. Students were encouraged to break away from the confines of music genres and explore and create new soundscapes.

Bolstered by the overwhelming positive feedback from its first run, Four Blank Walls: Experiments in Sound will make a comeback in the new EMCC season next semester in Mar 2024 with a new group of talented NUS students from a wide range of music backgrounds.

Here's a photo and video recap of the Four Blank Walls: Experiments in Sound journey.

As a sound designer, Syafiq Halid explores and experiments with sound in different forms. Ahead of the production, Syafiq worked closely with NUS students through a series of workshops and hands-on training.
