NUS Sports Scholarship  (Mid-Term)

The NUS Mid-term Sports Scholarship is awarded to sportsmen who have outstanding sporting achievements representing the University or Singapore as well as to sports leaders who have contributed significantly towards the growth of NUS Sports by promoting community sports in NUS.

Applicants must:

1. Have represented and achieved outstanding sports results while representing NUS, Singapore University and/or Singapore*.

OR

Have a stellar track record of initiating and organising community sports events and created impact from promoting community sports participation. 

2. Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.2 or equivalent.
3. Displayed exemplary leadership, sportsmanship and conduct.
4. Contribution to the community within NUS through voluntary roles including but not limited to, leadership positions in NUS CCA/residential groups, organised community service projects outside of academic requirements will be a bonus.

*Includes:
i. student-athletes who have done exceptionally well for their matches despite the team not emerging top in the tournament e.g. top tertiary singles.
ii. athletes selected to represent the combined Singapore University team at ASEAN/World University Championships/Games.
iii. Carded national athletes representing Singapore.

Students are not eligible if:

• They are currently recipients of any other scholarship, fellowship, bursary, grant, award or allowance; or
• They are graduating in the prior year.

  • Tuition fees (after MOE Tuition Grant subsidy),
  • S$6,000 annual living allowance,
  • S$4,375 annual accommodation allowance if scholar is staying on campus,
  • Scholarship is bond-free.
  • The scholarship is offered to all undergraduate courses at NUS, excluding Music and Yale-NUS College, and is tenable for the remaining normal candidature period of the student (subject to annual renewal process).
  • Recipients of the scholarship (scholars) may not concurrently hold any other scholarship, fellowship, bursary, grant, award or allowance without prior approval from the University.
  • The scholarship will be monitored and renewed every semester provided the scholar:

i. Commits to sustained excellence in sports and contributes to NUS sports
(a) Commits to regular sports training, and
(b) Plans and prepares for competition selections
(c) Represents NUS* or Singapore University*, or
(d) Participates in/Organises sports events in partnership with OSA Sports, such as Dialogue/Engagements sessions, community sports events, Talks, etc. 
(*this applies to either in NUS varsity team or National team or equivalent)

OR

Commits to promoting sports in the NUS community
(a) Organise a community sport event or a new initiative promoting sports in NUS
(b) Partners with OSA Sports, such as Dialogue/Engagements sessions, faculty engagement events etc. or 
(c) Actively promotes sports in NUS

ii. Maintains a GPA 3.2 or equivalent
iii. Displays good conduct  

  • If the scholar decides to withdraw from the University and/or terminate the scholarship prematurely, the University reserves the right to impose repayment of all scholarship monies disbursed to the scholar.

The above schedule is subjected to changes and will be updated, if applicable.

  • Students may apply for the scholarship and choose for their application to be considered under Sports Excellence, Community Sports or both. Evaluation for Sports Excellence and Community Sports is independent of each other. Scholarship awarded will be based on either Sports Excellence or Community Sports and not both.
  • Applicants will be assessed on their suitability for the scholarships, based on the strength of their applications and their performance in the NUS Sports Scholarship selection interview(s), if shortlisted.
  • Applicants shortlisted for selection interview(s) will be informed via e-mail. Selection interviews will be conducted in the first week of August onwards, and applicants will be informed of their scholarship application outcomes by mid August. Please ensure that you are available to attend the interviews in order to be considered for scholarships. Your scholarship application will be withdrawn if you are unable to attend any scheduled selection interview(s) without valid reason(s).
  • NUS reserves the right not to award any scholarship if there are no candidates of sufficient merit. The decision of the selection committee is final. Enquiries or disputes surrounding its decisions will not be entertained.
The application form consists of 5 sections and may take 15 to 20 mins to complete.

Section 2: Sports Excellence (if applicable)
a) You will need to list at least 2 to a max of 3 best sports results you have achieved. 
b) For each result, you will need to upload a supporting document verifying the result that you have achieved.
 
Section 3: Community Sports (if applicable)

a) You will need to list at least 2 to a max of 3 most impactful community sports events/initiatives that you have organised in your time in NUS.  
b) For each event/initiative, please attach the post event summary in no more than 2 x A4 pages with the following information:  

- Event Details (What, When, Where, Why and How)

- Number of Participants
- Photos or links to event video highlights
- Participants’ feedback, if any

Section 4: Referee Report (Optional)
You may nominate up to 2 persons to submit a referee report to support your application. Referees can be your coach, staff advisor*, high performance manager or equivalent. 
*OSA Sports Staff advisors cannot be nominated to submit a referee report. 

Section 5: Personal Statement
on why you are a great candidate for scholarship.

 
You can only submit your application once. 

You may nominate up to 2 persons to be a referee to support your scholarship application. You may nominate your coach, high performance manager, staff advisor* or equivalent who can recommend you for the scholarship that you are applying for. 
* OSA Sports Staff advisors cannot be nominated to submit a referee report.  

For applicants whose involvement is beyond and outside of NUS Sports groups such as national athletes who do not represent NUS or student leaders from Faculty or residential Clubs, you are strongly encouraged to nominate a referee to submit a report. 

You may direct your referees to refer to this MTSS – Referee Information Sheet for the link to submit the referee report. 
 
You will need to provide your referee your NUS email address (as per your submission in this application) as a reference ID.  
 
All referee reports must be submitted by: Deadline TBA. You will receive an email notification when your referee submits his/her report.  

Q1: What are community sports events/projects?
Ans: Community Sports events refer to events whose primary intention is to bring the community (eg. hall, school, faculty or the entire organisation) together to promote social interactions/community building through any type of sporting activities.
Q2: When must I have organised these community sports events/projects?
Ans: You can submit up to 3 projects or initiatives that you have personally organised since you were a student in NUS. You will need to have organised at least two such projects to be considered for the scholarship.
Q3: If I represent my hall in sports competitions, will I be eligible to be considered under Sports Excellence?
Ans: No. Only students who have represented NUS, Singapore University or Singapore will be eligible.
Q4: When must I have competed to be eligible?
Ans: You can submit up to 3 of your best competitions that you have participated in the last five years or A Division (or equivalent), or earlier. This means that you should not include competition results that were at lower divisions (C / D) or if they took place more than 5 years ago. You will need to submit as least 2 competition results to be considered for scholarship. 
Q5: I used to compete at the National and tertiary level, but I am now retired. Will I still be eligible?
Ans: No, as you will not be able to meet the scholarship renewal terms & conditions that requires you be committed to training for competitions to represent NUS, Singapore University or Singapore.
