NUS Sports Scholarship (Mid-Term)

Application for AY25/26 opens 3 June 2025 onwards.

The NUS Mid-term Sports Scholarship is awarded to sportsmen who have outstanding sporting achievements representing the University or Singapore as well as to Sports Leaders who have contributed significantly towards the growth of NUS Sports by promoting community sports in NUS.

Applicants must:

1. Have represented and achieved outstanding sports results while representing NUS, Singapore University and/or Singapore*.

OR

Have a stellar track record of initiating and organising community sports events and created impact from promoting community sports participation in NUS.

2. Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5 or equivalent.
3. Displayed exemplary leadership, sportsmanship and conduct.
4. Contribution to the community within NUS through voluntary roles including but not limited to, leadership positions in NUS CCA/residential groups, organised community service projects outside of academic requirements will be a bonus.

*Includes:
i. student-athletes who have done exceptionally well for their matches despite the team not emerging top in the tournament e.g. top tertiary singles.
ii. athletes selected to represent the combined Singapore University team at ASEAN/World University Championships/Games.
iii. Carded national athletes representing Singapore.

Students are not eligible if:

• They are currently recipients of any other scholarship, fellowship, bursary, grant, award or allowance; or
• They are graduating in the prior year.

  • Tuition fees (after MOE Tuition Grant subsidy),
  • S$6,000 annual living allowance,
  • S$4,375 annual accommodation allowance if scholar is staying on campus,
  • Scholarship is bond-free.
  • The scholarship is offered to all undergraduate courses at NUS, excluding Music College, and is tenable for the remaining normal candidature period of the student (subject to annual renewal process).
  • Recipients of the scholarship (scholars) may not concurrently hold any other scholarship, fellowship, bursary, grant, award or allowance without prior approval from the University.
  • The scholarship will be monitored and renewed every semester provided the scholar:

i. Commits to sustained excellence in sports and contributes to NUS Sports:
(a) Committing to trainings regularly, and;
(b) Plan and prepares for competition selections, and;
(c) Contribute to NUS Sports by,
     (i) Representing NUS or Singapore* in major competitions identified by NUS and agreed
         to by the Scholar, or
     (ii) Participating and/or organizing sports events in partnership with the NUS Office of Student
          Affairs (Sports), such as dialogue/engagement sessions, community sports events, talks and/or equivalent.
(d) Participates in/Organises sports events in partnership with OSA Sports, such as dialogue/engagements sessions, community sports talks/events faculty engagament events, and/or equivalent.
*applicable to representations for NUS Varsity team, Singapore Combined University team, National team, or equivalent

OR

Commits to promoting sports in the NUS Community:
(a) Organise at least one Community Sports event or a new initiative promoting Sports in NUS, and;
(b) Partner with NUS Office of Student Affairs (Sports), such as dialogue/engagements sessions, community sports talks/events, faculty engagement events, and/or equivalent actively promotes sports in NUS and other NUS entities.

ii. Maintains a GPA 3.5 or equivalent
iii. Displays good conduct

  • If the scholar decides to withdraw from the University and/or terminate the scholarship prematurely, the University reserves the right to impose repayment of all scholarship monies disbursed to the scholar.

Scholarship Application Outcome

The above schedule is subjected to changes and will be updated, if applicable.

  • Students are to apply for the scholarship either under Sports Excellence or Community Sports. Each student can only submit one application. Scholarship awarded will be based on which scholarship (Sports Excellence or Community Sports) the student applied under.
  • Applicants will be assessed on their suitability for the scholarships, based on the strength of their applications and their performance in the NUS Sports Scholarship selection interview(s), if shortlisted.
  • Applicants shortlisted for Selection Interview(s) will be informed via e-mail. Selection Interviews will be conducted according to the timeline above. Please ensure that you are available to attend the interview dates and timings stated to be considered for the scholarships. Your scholarship application will be withdrawn if you are unable to attend any scheduled selection interview(s) without valid reason(s).
  • NUS reserves the right not to award any scholarship if there are no candidates of sufficient merit. The decision of the selection committee is final. Enquiries or disputes surrounding its decisions will not be entertained.
The application form consists of 5 sections and may take about 30mins to complete.

Section 2: Sports Excellence (if applicable)
a) You will need to list at least two and up to three best sports results/achievements you have attained in the past two years (1 Jan 2023 - 15 June 2025) during your candidature in NUS. 
b) For each result, you will need to upload a supporting document verifying the result that you have attained.
 
Section 3: Community Sports (if applicable)

a) You will need to list at least two and up to three sports events or initiatives that you have presonally organised during your candidature in NUS to promote sports to the NUS Community with a total minimum reach of 100 participants. You must have an influential and direct contribution towards these events or initiatives.
b) For each event/initiative, please attach the post event summary in no more than 2 x A4 pages with the following information:  

- Event Details (What, When, Where, Why and How)
- Number of Participants
- Photos or links to event video highlights
- Participants’ feedback, if any

Section 4: Referee Report (Compulsory)
You are required to nominate minimum two persons to submit a referee report to support your application. Referees can be your coach, staff advisor*, high performance manager or equivalent. 
*OSA Sports Staff advisors cannot be nominated to submit a referee report. 

Section 5: Personal Statement
Share why you are a great candidate for the respective scholarship you are applying.

You can only submit your application once. 

You are required to nominate minimum two persons to submit a referee report to support your application. Referees can be your coach, staff advisor*, high performance manager, team captain or equivalent. Applications without two referee reports will be deemed as incomplete and may not be considered.
*OSA Staff Advisors and other NUS/OSA staff who may be appointed to be a part of the interview panel (including Head of Sports section, Head of Student Outreach division and OSA Deanery members) shall not be a referee to any applicant.

You may direct your referees to submit the MTSS – Referee Information Sheet.

You will need to provide your referee your NUS email address (as per your submission in this application) as a reference ID.  

All referee reports must be submitted by 18 June 2025. Applications without two referee reports will be deemed as incompleted and may not be considered.

Q1: What are community sports events/projects?
Ans: Community Sports events refer to events whose primary intention is to bring the community (eg. hall, school, faculty or the entire organisation) together to promote social interactions/community building through any type of sporting activities. Such events must have a total minimum reach of 100 participants.
Q2: When must I have organised these community sports events/projects?
Ans: You can submit up to three events or initiatives that you have personally organised since matriculating in NUS. You will need to have organised at least two of such projects to be considered for the scholarship and have influential and direct contribution towards these event or initiatives.
Q3: If I represent my hall in sports competitions, will I be eligible to be considered under Sports Excellence?
Ans: No. Only students who have represented NUS, Singapore Combined University team or Singapore are eligible.
Q4: When must I have competed to be eligible?
Ans: You may submit at least two and up to three best sports results/achievements that you have attained in the last two years (1 Jan 2023 - 15 June 2025) to be considered for the scholarship. These results and achievements must have taken place during your candidature in NUS. 
Q5: I used to compete at the National and tertiary level, but I am now retired. Will I still be eligible?
Ans: No, as you will not be able to meet the Scholarship Renewal (terms & conditions) that requires commitment to training for competitions to represent NUS, Combined Singapore University team or Singapore.
